Do you declaw cats?

The clinic does not perform nor advocate declawing. If this procedure is desired, it is suggested that the surgery and declaw be done at the same time so the animal does not have to be under anesthesia twice.

Scratching is normal behavior. It feels good to the cat and files their nails which allow newer growth.

Declawing is not simply removing the nail but an actual amputation of part of their paw and bone and may cause behavioral problems because cats may be more likely to bite since their first line of defense is gone.

Inexpensive alternatives:

  • Trim your cat’s claws frequently (we offer this service).
  • Provide a scratching post or cardboard scratcher and sprinkle catnip on it.
  • Try Sticky Paws®, a double sided tape that can be put on any surface including plants to discourage scratching.
  • Consider temporary glue on nail caps that render the claws harmless by covering them with plastic.
